Audio Recording

During this session we looked at how to use a range of sound recording equipment and accessories. We covered recording using external microphones such as the zoom recorder. We also covered using a boom microphone connected to a zoom recorder using an XLR cable. When packing away this equipment is is vital to reel the XLR cable in such a way that the cable is not damaged during storage so you reel it into a circle instead of folding it for example. When using a zoom recorder you hold it close to the subject and they speak directly into the microphone, whereas when using the boom mic you can capture detailed audio from a longer distance allowing for the mic to more easily remain out of frame. While recording using either piece of equipment it is key to monitor the audio for volume and clarity using a good quality set of headphones.

I found this session particularly useful as I had never used audio recording equipment before unlike photography equipment. I am hoping to continue developing my use of audio recording equipment during the course by becoming more confident with it’s setup and techniques for capturing crisp and clear recordings.
